A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention to alleviate severe pain, stop bleeding, save a tooth, or address a potentially serious infection. For children, dental emergencies can be particularly distressing, which is why our team at Aloha Pediatric Dentistry is always prepared to provide prompt, gentle care. We understand that emergencies don't follow a schedule, so we offer same-day appointments and after-hours care for severe cases.
Here are a few common emergencies:
Our experienced team is equipped to handle a wide range of dental emergencies, providing quick relief from pain and addressing urgent issues promptly. We prioritize emergency cases to ensure your child receives the care they need without delay.
We understand that dental emergencies can be scary for children. Our gentle, compassionate approach helps calm anxious kids, making the experience less traumatic. We explain procedures in child-friendly terms and use behavior management techniques to keep your child comfortable.
After addressing the immediate emergency, we develop a comprehensive treatment plan to prevent future issues. We educate both children and parents on proper oral care and preventive measures to reduce the risk of future emergencies.
When you bring your child in for a dental emergency, our primary goal is to alleviate pain and address the immediate issue. Here's what you can expect during your emergency visit:
Upon arrival, our team will quickly assess your child's condition. We'll ask about symptoms, how the injury occurred (if applicable), and any relevant medical history. This helps us determine the urgency of the situation and plan the most appropriate treatment.
If your child is in pain, our first priority is to make them comfortable. We may use local anesthesia or other pain management techniques to ensure your child is at ease before proceeding with any necessary treatments.
Depending on the nature of the emergency, we may need to take X-rays or perform other diagnostic procedures. These help us identify the extent of the problem and determine the best course of action. We use child-friendly explanations to keep your child informed and calm throughout this process.
Once we've diagnosed the issue, we'll provide immediate treatment as needed. This might include procedures like tooth extraction, pulp therapy, or temporary restorations. We'll then discuss a follow-up plan with you, which may involve scheduling additional appointments for more comprehensive treatment or monitoring the situation.

If your child knocks out a permanent tooth, time is critical. Gently rinse the tooth without scrubbing it, and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that's not possible, place the tooth in milk or saliva and bring your child and the tooth to our office immediately. We have the best chance of saving the tooth if we can treat it within an hour of the injury.
For temporary pain relief, you can give your child over-the-counter pain medication appropriate for their age. Applying a cold compress to the outside of the cheek can help reduce swelling. If the pain is severe or persistent, contact us for guidance on immediate care.
Yes, we provide after-hours care for severe dental emergencies. We have an answering service and doctors on call during all non-business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. If you're unsure whether your situation requires immediate attention, don't hesitate to call. We can assess the urgency and provide guidance on whether to seek immediate care or wait for regular office hours.
While not all emergencies are preventable, many can be avoided with proper care and precautions. Encourage your child to wear a mouthguard during sports activities, avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or hard candy, and maintain good oral hygiene habits. Regular dental check-ups also help us identify and address potential issues before they become emergencies. We're always happy to provide personalized advice on preventing dental injuries and maintaining your child's oral health.
